Ease of construction, overall cost effectiveness, great building envelope with substantial contributions to energy costs. The SIPs provide a superior insulated envelope, while windows bring in plenty of daylight – all helping to reduce energy usage. Landscaped swales allowed rainwater to percolate into the ground. The most sustainable feature of the project is homes’ size, which is “among the most important determinants of environmental impact” (Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, 2010). The small footprints and compact design will save resources during construction, and throughout the building’s lifecycle.

2021 Building Excellence Award

The Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA) announced the 19th Annual Building Excellence Award (BEA) winners at the Annual SIPA Member meeting held virtually on March 16. SIPA represents the construction industry’s investment in structural insulated panels (SIPs), and the BEAs are an annual celebration of SIPA members’ innovation and design.

Building material choices and the benefits of SIP designs are more important and apparent than ever before. With the price of lumber soaring in the last year, SIPs are an even more cost-effective choice for residential and commercial projects. Building with SIPs is not only cost-effective, but also the best way to reduce emissions while embracing energy-efficient design which benefits both the builder and the occupant. The annual Building Excellence Awards gives SIP manufacturers and builders an opportunity to showcase projects completed the year prior. The entries include structures completed in 2020 by SIPA members, and BEA judges evaluate each project on three criteria: design and structural engineering innovation, creative use of SIP construction, and environmental sustainability.

In addition to the nine building categories, entries that demonstrate eco-efficiency, health, resilience, and renewable energy can be considered in the high-performance running for that category. This year revealed six high-performance winners listed within their respective category below.
